Iodosulfuron methyl, the active ingredient in ProForce Duke Herbicide, belongs to the Sulfonylurea chemistry class and is a group B herbicide. As with other herbicides of the sulfonylurea herbicides, the primary biochemical target site of iodosulfuron methyl sodium is the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS). ALS is a key enzyme in the production of branched-chain amino acids, critical for protein synthesis and normal plant growth.

The visible symptoms of herbicidal action are arrested growth within the first few days after application and the appearance of chlorotic patches, followed by slow shoot necrosis. Susceptible plants stop growth almost immediately after post-emergence application. Plants will be completely killed 4 to 6 weeks after application under good growing conditions.

Pack Sizes: 100gm & 500gm. The 100gm pack is supplied with a 1-gram measure scoop.

Will ProForce Duke Herbicide kill paspalum in buffalo grass without harming the buffalo?

  1. Q Will ProForce Duke Herbicide kill paspalum in buffalo grass without harming the buffalo?

ProForce Duke Herbicide is registered for safe use in Buffalo Turf to target Bahia Grass ( variety Paspalum notatum only). Repeat applications may be required as the results of a single application are suppression and seed head reduction. Always refer to the 'directions for use' label/booklet before use to ensure it is the correct product for your situation.

  2. Can ProForce Duke be used amongst native plants (native ground covers and saltbush type plants etc.) for soursob and onion weed? Can it also be used in a flower garden to remove onion weeds with pinkish flowers? Roundup (Glyphosate) is recommended, but I was hoping a selective herbicide might be better.

Unfortunately, no data is available on the effects of ProForce Duke Herbicide on host species other than Buffalo Grass, Common Couch, Hybrid Couch & Kikuyu Grass.  We suggest speaking with the manufacturer of Duke Herbicide (Indigo Speciality Products) on 0402 735 887 or [email protected] before undertaking an 'off-label' trial to test the effects on other species.

There are no restraints on the ProForce Duke Herbicide label for domestic turf situations, and you should always read the "directions for use" carefully before applying.  ProForce Duke Herbicide is recommended to be applied evenly over the turf area by a boom spray as spot spraying may be uneven, and over-application may occur.  The rate to control onion grass as per the label is 25grams per 10,000m2 (hectare) i.e. 0.25grams/100m2.

  6. Is ProForce Duke Herbicide safe around other broadleaf plants (other than those stated in the Description)? I want to try it out in a garden border where the Onion weed has migrated into the Liriope muscari, making it near impossible to remove). It also pops up amongst other plants as well (shrubs etc.)

Tips For Use

Application Tips:

  • The 100gm pack is supplied with a 1-gram measure scoop.
  • For optimal results, apply a water volume rate of 200-500L/ha.
  • Duke 100WG can be transferred or ‘tracked’ by equipment or foot movement.  To minimise this risk, irrigate treated areas after application, but allow at least 4 hours for chemical uptake.
  • After use, ensure spray tanks are cleaned thoroughly, according to label directions.
  • To optimize results with Duke 100WG, always apply with a non-ionic surfactant or Hasten adjuvant at the recommended rate on the surfactant product label. Also, ensure the application is made to actively growing weeds and not to weeds in stress, as the movement of the herbicide through the weed may be limited, and subsequent weed control may be impacted.
  • For the best suppression of winter grass, it is best to target younger weed plants. Less than 50 % control can be expected where more mature plants are established.
  • For good Bahiagrass suppression, apply during summer when the turf is actively growing. Apply as soon as seed heads start to form or when it becomes a regular mowing intervention issue. Apply 2-3 times at 4-week intervals after mowing for best performance.
  • Avoid mowing during the 3 to 4 days preceding or following the treatment.
  • Avoid entry into treated areas until the spray has dried.
  • Don’t graze treated turf or feed turf clippings from any treated area to poultry or livestock. Very toxic to aquatic plants and certain algae. Do not apply under weather conditions or from spraying equipment that may cause spray to drift onto nearby susceptible plants/crops, cropping lands or pastures.
  • Application to very dry sandy soils followed by soaking rainfall may cause turf damage. Turf damage may also be increased in highly alkaline soils (soil pH >8.5 as determined by soil in water suspension).
  • Avoid application on turf that is not yet established or under stress from environmental conditions.
  • Allow at least six weeks between the last application and overseeding with cool season grasses for winter cover.
  • Don’t use clippings from treated areas for mulch around vegetables or fruit trees.

General Instructions:

  • ProForce Duke Herbicide is a selective sulfonylurea herbicide.
  • It is predominantly a foliar herbicide with less activity via the soil.
  • Duke 100 WG will not reliably control weeds that emerge after spraying.
  • Results are best under good growing conditions, and application to weeds or turf under stress should be avoided.

Restraints:

  • Do not apply by air or through any type of irrigation equipment.
  • Do not apply to turf which is under stress or which is not yet established.
  • Do not use if rain is expected within 4 hours.
  • Do not use it on golf or bowling greens.
  • Do not make more than one application of a group 2 herbicide in a season except for Bahia grass –
refer to the Directions for Use for Bahia grass.

Mixing:

  • Ensure that the spray tank is completely clean before mixing.
  • Half fill the spray tank with water, then with agitators in motion, add the correct amount of Duke 100 WG directly into the spray tank.
  • Then add wetting agent or crop oil as recommended.
  • Complete filling the tank with agitators in motion.
  • Agitation must continue before and during spraying.
  • If the pH of the water carrier is less than 5.5, use a buffer solution (ie Wilt 700) to raise the pH to 7.0.
  • Do not mix Duke 100 WG with acid-forming compounds in the spray vat.
  • Do not leave the spray mix standing in the vat overnight.

Application:

  • Ensure spraying equipment is properly calibrated before use.
  • Ensure that complete and even spray coverage of all weeds is achieved.
  • Do not overlap sprayed areas.
  • Apply 50 cm above the turf with flat fan nozzles and medium droplet size with the boom.

Turf Safety:

  • Application to very dry sandy soils followed by soaking rainfall may cause turf damage.
  • Turf damage may also be increased in highly alkaline soils (soil pH >8.5 as determined by soil in water suspension).
  • Avoid application on turf that is not yet established or under stress from environmental conditions.
  • Allow at least six weeks between the last application and overseeding with cool season grasses for winter cover.

Precautions:

  • Mowing: Avoid mowing during the 3 to 4 days preceding or following the treatment.
  • Re-entry period: Do not allow entry into treated areas until the spray has dried.

Protection Of Crops, Native And Other Non-Target Plants:

  • Very toxic to aquatic plants and certain algae.
  • Do not apply under weather conditions or from spraying equipment that may cause spray to drift onto nearby susceptible plants/crops, cropping lands or pastures.
  • Do not replant any crop or ornamental to treated areas other than the turf grass listed in the directions for use for a period of 12 months after application.

Protection Of Livestock:

  • Do not graze treated turf or feed turf clippings from any treated area to poultry or livestock.

Protection Of Wildlife, Fish, Crustaceans And the Environment:

  • Keep people and pets away from and off treated areas until spray deposits have dried.
  • Do not contaminate streams, rivers or waterways with chemical or used containers.
  • Do not apply if heavy rain is forecast.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
  • Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.
